No brakes. No gears. No fear. Our Go Ride youngsters have had plenty of practice demonstrating their competence at riding road, MTB, CX and grass track, and on Wednesday 12th April, they got the chance to experience the thrills of riding the boards of an indoor velodrome. For most this was their first time at a velodrome, and first time on a fixed gear track bike with no brakes. For some this was also the first time riding with clipless pedals. Despite some initial trepidation, by the end of the session, all of them loved it.

The staff of the Derby velodrome were outstandingly welcoming and patient with us, taking time to explain everything and encouraging nervous riders to give it a go, whilst also keeping more experienced riders busy.

With bankings angled up to 42 degrees, the 250m track is intimidating at first sight. After working out how to clip in, riders started gently by circulating the flat infield. As their confidence grew, they were encouraged up on to the cote d’azure and then progressively up on to the banked sections.

Before long they were circulating the track, following wheels and performing half lap changes and looking really impressive. By the end of the session, everyone was loving their time at the velodrome. A few of our riders have now progressed on to British Cycling’s Eastern Track School – a programme designed to provide riders with the skills they’ll need to race in velodrome events.

Huge thanks to King’s Lynn Cycling Club for funding this trip and making it possible for everyone to take part. Now to organise a similar trip for the adults to have a play…
