Kings Lynn Cycling Club - Handbook - 1954

CLUB TROPHIES
THE ORIGINAL CHAMPIONSHIP CUP
Pre-war, the Club Championship Cup, presented by the president, was awarded to the club’s ‘best all-rounder’ from 1931 to 1935 inclusive, this was for the best average speeds at 25, 50 and 100 miles, but at the Annual General Meeting in 1936 it was awarded for the best average speeds at 25, 50, 100 and 12 hours, whether in club, association or open events, and the best all rounder competition is still decided on this basis. The speed in miles per hour at each distance was calculated, and the average speeds decided the competition. The cup was held by the winner for one year and became the property of a member winning it three times, not necessarily in succession. Two championship cups have been won outright, the first by H. A. Juby in 1933, and the second by H. Vanderloo in 1938.

"The best all-rounder " competition was suspended during the war, and in 1946 the club became possessed of a magnificent trophy, unfortunately through the death of a keen, energetic, and popular club member, Len Holmes, who (after gaining the military medal) was killed during the war and left in his will money to buy for the club a championship cup which we have decided to call
‘THE LEONARD HOLMES MEMORIAL CUP’, which is to be a perpetual trophy for first-claim members of the club to be competed for on the lines of the previous cup, but not to be won out right.
